Section Meeting
NREL presentation on
Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles

Meeting Time: 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm
Meeting Place: NREL Visitors Center

Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) technology holds great promise for reducing the demand for petroleum in the transportation sector. However, significant technical challenges remain before PHEVs can become viable automotive products and penetrate the vehicle fleet. In particular, battery cost, volume, and life are the major obstacles that must be overcome for these vehicles to succeed.

NREL's Center for Transportation Technologies and Systems has contributed to the evolution of PHEV technology for over 5 years. NREL currently works in partnership with the US Department of Energy and automotive industry to identify and overcome barriers and help bring viable PHEVs to market.

This seminar will discuss the status of PHEV technology and industry as well as highlighting NREL's contributions to the field. Topics discussed will include:

-- What is a PHEV?

-- State-of-the-art in PHEV technology

-- Notable players in the PHEV industry

Key challenges in bringing viable PHEVs to market:

§ National benefits assessment - petroleum displacement and greenhouse emissions
§ PHEV systems modeling
§ Cost-benefit analysis of various PHEV designs
§ Definition of battery requirements for PHEVs
§ Testing, measuring and reporting of PHEV fuel economy and performance
§ Evaluating real-world performance of PHEVs

Please join us at NREL to learn more about this exciting vehicle technology.

About the speaker:

Andrew Simpson is an NREL vehicle modeling specialist who assesses the performance, efficiency and cost of next-generation vehicle technologies for reduced energy consumption and emissions. His current focus is plug-in hybrid-electric vehicles. He joined the Advanced Vehicle Systems Group at NREL after completing his Ph.D. at The University of Queensland, Brisbane, Australia. He has 10 years of experience working on advanced vehicle technologies in industry, academia and government, including participation in three separate hybrid-electric vehicle development projects.
