Humanitarian Engineering

Wednesday, Nov. 28

Meeting Time: 6:00 to ~7:30 pm
Meeting Place: Colorado School of Mines, Brown Eng. Building, Rm. 201

Sustainable Development for the economically impoverished requires significant trust and awareness of local culture and society, far beyond that which is understood by most engineers. Our lives in the developed world ill prepare us for the challenges that lie with those less fortunate that make up the majority inhabitants of our planet. To be sure, we are connected in more ways than we know or perhaps care to acknowledge. We enter the service projects for the poor with the belief that "we" are using our professional skills to help "them" but we soon learn that "we" are in this process actually helping "ourselves".

This talk will focus on aspects found important for the engineers in training and engineering faculty working in sustainable development or humanitarian engineering. Examples will be taken from the experiences of students and faculty working on projects that are the culmination of a new minor program at Colorado School of Mines entitled Humanitarian Engineering. The minor is designed to prepare students for a capstone design experience in service learning and sustainable development for the underserved.
